The company is named for Ettore Steccone, who came to the United States from Italy in 1922 and became a window cleaner. Unhappy with the tools available, he vowed to create a better product. Over the next ten years he and his wife, Emma, tinkered in their garage in Oakland, California, until they invented the first single-blade squeegee in 1936 and patented it in 1937.
